A collective publication exploring the strategies that contemporary artists and thinkers are using to create alternate and restorative futures.
The Virtual Ecologies Symposium will culminate in a beautifully designed and printed book. Through exploring the intersection between art, science, and technology, the book will ask: How can the strategies of contemporary artists and thinkers help create alternate futures based in environmental justice and ecological restoration?
The Virtual Ecologies book will focus on a variety of approaches that people are using to make non-fiction ecological work. It will bring together artists, scholars and activists from the domains of documentary filmmaking, history, immersive media, journalism, and social practice. United by a commitment to climate, ecology and science communication, the book will create a space for surfacing diverse strategies, collectively exploring their advantages and challenges, and interrogating how they effect political and social change. This will contribute unique insights into the links between art and impact, particularly with regards to new media and climate communication.
The book will include: edited conversations from the private sessions, a toolkit of strategies, commissioned articles responding to the conversations, and artworks and illustrations. Additionally, it will provide a tool kit for others who are looking to make similar work or effect ecological change.
