A tiny patch of land is revealed to be a vast and verdant terrain.
Set in a 3D scanned region of the Badlands of South Dakota, a shifting virtual landscape unfolds across screens, walls, and the floor. The landscape comes alive through a diverse array of documentary voices ranging from land stewards, to scientists, to Indigenous knowledge holders. Poetic footage, volumetric objects, and deeply researched archival material emerge from the terrain responding to visitors' movement in real time, revealing hidden histories and complex ecological relationships.
Strata uses spatial storytelling to transform our experience of ecology through a uniquely immersive and dynamic landscape. Combining 3D scans, documentary footage, interactive technologies, archival, and spatial audio, the installation invites viewers into a multi-layered and embodied experience of place, history, and ecology. This generative installation, where no two experiences will be the same, creates an expansive portrait of place that rewards curiosity and close observation.
The installation is adapted from the live-edited documentary performance. We’ve designed a touring version that is modular, adaptable, and easily configurable for a variety of spaces. We are in the process of developing a large-scale exhibition featuring advanced interactivity, and sculptural elements. These installations will be activated by both performances and guided walks where local experts invite viewers to notice the myriad perspectives of humans and non-humans who shape their own lands.
