An interactive documentary game where ecological thinking becomes experiential.
Strata is an interactive documentary game set in the Badlands of western South Dakota. Designed for non-linear exploration, it combines a virtual landscape, documentary footage, archival material, and spatialized audio to cultivate ecological thinking through self-guided discovery.Players navigate a virtual landscape that is a 3D scan of an 80-foot region of the Badlands, discovering that this small patch of land holds a tapestry of buried histories, memories, and observations. As players weave their own narrative paths—a non-linear trajectory that will be different for each—they weave their own connections across a diversity of voices, histories and knowledge systems that shape this land, invited to practice relational thinking, field research methods, and the integration of distinct worldviews. Attentiveness and close observation are rewarded as the land comes alive and expands through documentary footage, archives, and intimate oral narrations that emerge from the terrain. Expanding on innovative models of experiential learning, knowledge in Strata emerges through exploration and relation, cultivating a sense of active stewardship that makes accessible the complexity of environmental challenges without flattening them—learning with the land, not merely about it.
