A trail guide to historically and culturally significant paths on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

We are collaborating with renowned Lakota ethnobotanist Richard T. Sherman to produce a trail guide which maps historically and culturally significant paths on the Pine Ridge Reservation that are unmarked or overwritten by settler names. This is in early production—we have mapped two trails with Richard including gathering GPS data, oral history recordings, and photographs.

Richard is an ethnobotanist, educator, and author. For five years he led the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority as Executive Director, followed by ten years as Lead Wildlife Biologist. During that time he developed the first comprehensive Tribal Fish & Wildlife Code and worked extensively to improve overgrazed reservation lands. He collaboratively developed an Indigenous Stewardship Model that is a starting point for integrating culturally appropriate solutions to issues of natural resource stewardship and conflict resolution.

While our team is helping to fundraise for these projects and contributing our time and skillsets, all funds and proceeds go to Richard and his collaborators. We are actively fundraising for this project—please get in touch if you’re interested in donating or supporting.
